As we've seen with the other books in the Empyrean series, we started off exactly where we left off. Shocked, curious and slightly pissed off (personally). Violet starts her monologue stressing about Xaden while telepathically talking to Andarna. Bad day to lose your mother and find out your boyfriend is now a soul sucking energy stealing monster am I right?
As far as the first 50-100 pages go, it took me a while to remember what happened in the last book to keep my memory refreshed. I would have preferred a shorter, and quicker introduction to the third book with a refresher that instantly hooked me back into the series after nearly ten months between books.
Aaaaaand as soon as I told myself I was going to write snippet sized review paragraphs I became hyper-focused and ended up finishing the book a few days ago. To be honest, there isn't much to keep the reader updated on that wasn't an ongoing narrative until the very last paragraph of the book.
So Violet and co. embark on a journey to find Andarna's kind, which obviously doesn't go to plan because when does anything go right or simply for these characters? For some reason we meet Xaden's mum?? Personally I didn't think this added anything to the plot except for shock value. After surfing across the ocean across a shit tonne of irrelevant islands trying to 'build an army' to fight the Venin we are hinted towards a backstory of why Violet has white hair. I was really hoping this would be expanded on a bit more than it was at the end of the book, the answer felt too simple to just be 'she was a sick child so we tried sacrificing her to the God of Death' hoping this would bless Violet and 'cure' her.
Negatives aside, I did really enjoy the ease of reading this book. The climax kept my attention, and I stayed invested until the very end. Am I going to be anxiously waiting until the next book in the series is announced?
